How to Sync a Recently Changed Password to Your Windows or Mac Computer

Body

This article explains what to do after changing your password via a password portal (e.g., Office 365, Okta, or your organization's identity system) while already signed in to your computer.

Scenario:

You log in to your Windows or Mac computer using your usual password, then change your account password through a web-based portal. After the change, your new password no longer matches the one cached on your local device.

To avoid login failures, account lockouts, or keychain issues, follow the steps below to sync your updated password to your computer.

Windows

  1. After changing your password at aims.okta.com, ensure you are connected to the Aims network. If you are off-campus, ensure you are connected to GlobalProtect VPN.

  2. Lock your computer by pressing the Windows key + L.

  3. At the lock screen, unlock your computer using the new password.

Mac

  1. After changing your password at aims.okta.com, ensure you are connected to the Aims network. If you are off-campus, ensure you are connected to GlobalProtect VPN.

  2. From the Finder menu, click Lock Screen.

  3. Unlock using your new password

  4. From the Finder menu, click Restart.

  5. Log in with your new password

You should receive the following message: "The system was unable to unlock your login keychain." Click Update Keychain Password. When prompted for a password, enter your old password. This will unlock your keychain and update it with your new password.
